Integrated device manufacturer Akoustis is sampling its single-crystal bulk acoustic wave (BAW) filter to a tier-1 enterprise-class Wi-Fi access-point customer. Aimed at next-generation enterprise Wi-Fi 7 architectures, the XBAW filter allows more precise filtering to capture stronger and more reliable signals.

According to Akoustis, it has redeveloped its single-crystal nanomaterials and created a new process that delivers BAW filters with higher power handling and improved harmonics compared to the company’s standard polycrystal materials. With the single-crystal XBAW filter, access-point makers will have the ability to design products with higher transmit power, enabling greater range and obstruction penetration. Improved harmonics increase the linearity of the power amplifier in the radio chain, reducing noise in the transmit path.

The tier-1 customer plans to use the XBAW filter in various Wi-Fi 7 routers that are slated to begin shipping in the first half of 2024. Currently, the routers are expected to employ 2×2 and 4×4 MU-MIMO architectures, with multiple XBAW filters per device.
