Quectel unveiled the Rx255C series of 5G NR Reduced Capability (RedCap) modules based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X35 5G modem-RF device. The wireless modules provide low-latency 5G communication, while offering considerable optimization in size, energy savings, and cost effectiveness.

The RedCap specification introduced in 3GPP 5G NR Release 17 addresses wireless devices that do not require full 5G NR capabilities. RedCap devices will help drive the reach of 5G technology into a variety of new business verticals and mobile broadband scenarios, such as entry-level broadband, compute, industrial automation, smart city, smart energy, and smart wearables.

Rx255C modules support 5G standalone (SA) mode and a maximum bandwidth of 20 MHz on the sub-6 GHz frequency band. The series is backward-compatible with LTE networks and covers nearly all the mainstream carriers worldwide. Modules provide a theoretical peak downlink data rate of approximately 220 Mbps and an uplink data rate of about 100 Mbps.

To optimize the cost and size of the Rx255C modules, customers can choose the number of antennas, reduce the transmitting and receiving bandwidth, and select optional 64QAM/256QAM modulation. A wide range of interfaces is available, including PCIe 2.0 and USB 2.0, as well as supplementary functions like Voice over LTE and firmware over-the-air upgrades.

Quectel debuted the Rx255C series at the recent Mobile World Congress (MWC 2023). Engineering samples of the Rx255C will be available in the first half of 2023. A datasheet was not available at the time of this announcement.
