SiC power modules speed EV charging

onsemi’s APM32 series of SiC-based power modules handles on-board charging and high-voltage DC/DC conversion in all types of electric vehicles. Among the first to adopt SiC technology in a transfer molded package, the devices enhance efficiency and shorten the charge time of EVs and plug-in hybrid EVs.

Specifically designed for high-power 11-kW to 22-kW on-board chargers (OBCs), each of the three modules in the APM32 series exhibits low conduction and switching losses, as well as best-in-class thermal resistance and high voltage isolation to deal with 800-V bus voltages. These features allow for a more powerful OBC that can charge an EV faster and increase its operating range.

Two modules in the APM32 series, the NVXK2TR40WXT and NVXK2TR80WDT, are configured in a half-bridge topology with a breakdown capability of 1200 V, making them well-suited for high-voltage battery stacks. They are intended to be used in the OBC and HV DC/DC conversion stages. The third module, the NVXK2KR80WDT, is configured in a Vienna rectifier topology and used in the power factor correction (PFC) stage of the OBC. Six-pack and full-bridge modules are planned for the near future to complete the SiC OBC portfolio.

The top cool and isolated features of the DIP devices meet the most stringent automotive industry standards. Creepage and clearance distances comply with IEC 60664-1 and IEC 60950-1. Additionally, the modules are qualified to AEC-Q101 and AQG 324 for automotive use.
