Motion sensor quiets automotive cabin noise

Using active noise-control techniques for road-noise cancellation, the AIS25BA motion sensor from ST lowers in-cabin noise for a quieter ambient environment. The device is a 3-axis MEMS accelerometer with a time division multiplexing (TDM) digital interface that enables the system to synchronize the outputs from multiple accelerometers installed to measure vibrations throughout the vehicle. Noise cancellation algorithms measure ambient sounds and eliminate vibration using noise-cancelling waveforms.

At 30 µg/√Hz in the X and Y axes and 50 µg/√Hz in the Z axis, the AIS25BA has very low noise density, which the company says is 58% better than the closest competing alternative. Total sensor latency of 266 µs leaves the system plenty of time to generate noise-cancellation signals in real time. The part provides a user-selectable full-scale acceleration range of ±3.85/±7.7 g, wide and flat frequency response from DC to 2.4 kHz, and a 16-bit data output.

The AIS25BA is AEC-Q100 qualified and comes in a 14-lead LGA package with dimensions of 2.5×2.5×0.86 mm. Prices start at $3.90 each in lots of 1000 units.
