Radar transceiver empowers automotive ADAS

A high-definition radar transceiver, the RAA270205 from Renesas meets the demands of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD) applications. With four transmit and four receive channels, the part supports up to 16 MIMO channels for high angular accuracy and operates over a frequency band of 76 GHz to 81 GHz.

The RAA270205 was designed in cooperation with Steradian Semiconductors, which Renesas acquired earlier this year. It is well-suited for imaging radar, long-range forward-looking radar, and 4D radar, but can also be used for corner and central-processing radar architectures. The device packs an onboard engine for FFT calculation and a 112.5-Msample/s ADC that is nearly three times faster than competing devices, according to the manufacturer.

Renesas also reports that the RAA270205’s power consumption of 1.2 W is 50% lower than comparable transceivers, and its noise figure of 9 dB is 3 dB less than other radar transceivers. Further, the part’s chirp rate of up to 300 MHz/µs improves radar resolution and object detection.
