Two infrared LEDs from Osram, the SFH 4170S and SFH 4180S, deliver bright and uniform illumination for accurate 2-D facial recognition in smartwatches and smartphones. Housed in the company’s Oslon P1616 package with dimensions of just 1.6×1.6×0.85 mm, the SFH 4170S and SFH 4180S are the smallest Osram components for biometric applications.

Despite their small size, the IR LEDs furnish 1150 mW at 1A and a radiation intensity of 280 mW/sr. Homogeneous illumination of the face is a key aspect in 2-D facial recognition, which focuses on the 2-D features of a user’s face, such as the length of the bridge of the nose, the distance between the eyes, and the distance between the corners of the mouth. An infrared camera must reliably compare the image stored in the system with the current picture, making these high-power infrared emitters an important component in this type of application.

The SFH 4170S and SFH 4180S operate at wavelengths of 850 nm and 940 nm, respectively. The SFH 4170S benefits from the very high sensitivity of sensors in this wavelength, while the SFH 4180S avoids the red glow effect, which can be seen by the human eye.
