How to Remove Scratches on Watches

Watches get scratched to varying degrees through daily wear. If there are scratches on the watch, it affects the aesthetics. Different watch materials require different treatment methods:

Deep scratches need to be worked on locally first with an oilstone for smoothing. This is done under a magnifying glass to evenly flatten the scratch. Once the scratch is mostly smoothed out, select appropriate grit sandpaper to go along the original grinding pattern, which is usually radial from the dial center. This delicate task has to be done gradually to get the best outcome.

The same method can be applied to remove scratches and polish watch cases and bracelets. Straight lining patterns are easier to handle. For concentric patterns, mechanical tools would be more suitable.

For deeper local scratches on the case or bracelet, pre-treatment is necessary. Depending on the location, fine needle files or oilstones can be used, along with magnifying glasses to carefully smooth out dents.

Smoothening out scratches on cases and bracelets is not difficult with steady hands and focus. However, achieving a polished finish requires a buffing machine. It is best to send it to an authorized service center or professional watch repairer.
